Michaela Rothaug is a highly talented and experienced architect with a natural ability to
distill complex design challenges into simple, elegant solutions. Her training in Germany
provides her with a unique perspective, allowing her to approach both design and
technical challenges differently from many South African architects. This, combined with
20 years of hands-on experience in South Africa, has shaped her into a well-rounded and innovative professional. Her diverse portfolio spans educational, commercial, medical, and residential architecture, with a strong expertise in sustainability, demonstrated through a range of successful built projects. In recent years she
has expanded her focus to include interior design, bringing an exceptional eye for detail
and an innate ability to seamlessly connect the architectural vision down to the finest
elements.

Michaela is known for her calm demeanor, good humor, and unwavering work ethic,
qualities that help guide her team through even the most high-pressure situations. After
two decades with Nicholas Whitcutt Architects and three years leading MiRo Interior, she
became a founding partner of Horizon Studio in mid-2024.

Beyond her professional achievements, Michaela is deeply family-oriented, a dedicated mom, a loving wife and a devoted dog mom. Her warmth and passion for both life
and design make her an invaluable leader and an inspiration to those around her.
